Soule House
South Portland, ME – The family living here was moving out after their brother, who had invited us to explore the Irish Heritage Center in season 1, had passed away. Having grown up within the house and experiencing many strange occurrences, the owners were looking for the team to provide them with answers to their pasts, before they closed the doors on the home forever.
This was an old farmhouse from the 1850s that the city of South Portland swallowed up dating back to the 1850’s. David Soule bought the house in the 1970’s and that’s where our story begins. His brother Chris, our host for the evening, stated that David was very pragmatic and wouldn’t use the word ‘haunted’ lightly. Claims from the family s include weird feelings, being touched, seeing a figure in black, and a ‘haunted’ Ouija board that was stored under the floorboards in the attic after repeatedly spelling the word ‘Satan’. We brought this board out as a trigger object during the investigation, due more so to its relation to the hauntings in the home, and less as an actual tool to talk to the dead.
We have to take a moment to note that Haunt ME investigated this house with one operating space heater on the coldest night of the year. In between investigation sessions the teams would race back to the dining room to share their findings and come up with tactics, while huddled close around the only source of heat. Teams split to reduce noise contamination, and soldiered through the cold to conduct their investigations. The evidence this night was mostly personal experiences that could not be quantified or repeated, unfortunately. Ty and Carol both saw a strange manifestation of a black ball of shadows appear in a doorway before shooting across a room, but were unable to recreate it with passing traffic or any other light sources. Also, our camera team captured a bizarre orb of light floating around the investigator’s heads in several different rooms. While this is all worth noting, it’s not hard fast evidence of a haunting.
Also, worth noting would the use of the Ouija board trigger object. After not reacting for quite some time, the planchet eventually spelled out “UTI” slowly and repeatedly. While this didn’t fit into the investigation at the time, and did seem kind of silly, it is also worth noting that within a week 3 family members related to our team had experiences with UTI’s, and Katie’s Volkswagen Tourig UTI began acting up as well. Was this an incredibly vague warning? Could be, or could be a strange coincidence we never would have made, should the team had never touched the Ouija board. Either way, the team did not let this influence the rating of the Soule House, as the we finished out Season 2 strong, experiencing a wide range of strange paranormal results.
