St. Dominic’s Cathedral
Portland, ME – At a 200 year old church, we had the opportunity to have our first experience at a legitimately historical haunting. St. Dominic’s Cathedral has incredible roots in the Portland community, being a hub for Irish immigrants. The connections of these patrons, the amount of years of worship here, as well as the high amount of immigrant workers who constructed the building, were all factors that led us to believe could contribute to a haunting.
From a tech standpoint, this was the first time we had to do more of an in-depth technical effort. Again, working with the IR cameras that were attached to a hub with a cord, and no view screens. Also, we made sure each investigator was running an audio recorder the whole time and the expanse of the building was outfit with stationary cameras. Another new tactic for the team was ‘triggering’, hoping that speaking in Gaelic would prompt reaction from the spirits within. Katie felt the heaviest presence in the actual cathedral building, rather than the rest of the building, which matched the claims that we were given to us by the Irish Heritage Center who invited us in.
One of our favorite moments of the night was climbing into the bell tower to ring the giant bell which vibrated through the whole building and town. From the beauty of the stained glass windows to the sound of the bell, it was an exceptional experience for all of us. Ash and Kaitlyn were able to debunk some of the activity that occurred in the basement, but fell short in the cathedral. Bumps, knocks, footfalls and the team’s first EVP all contributed into the team’s 3rd investigation being a success. Since then we’ve returned to the Irish Heritage center several times, both for paranormal events, and to enjoy its ambiance.
